Why pads start to smell by 3pm. It was never you.

It's the thing every woman notices and nobody mentions. The afternoon smell on pad days has nothing to do with your hygiene, and everything to do with one layer of material.

Here's the mechanism, explained properly, and what actually fixes it.

THE 3PM MOMENT

You know the moment. It's mid afternoon. You're in a lift, a meeting room, the school pick up queue, and a small paranoid voice asks: can anyone else smell that?

You did nothing wrong. You showered this morning. You changed your pad at lunch. And still, by three o'clock, there it is. Faint, but there. So you keep your cardigan on, sit a little further back, and add it to the long list of things you manage silently every month.

Here's what twenty years of pastel packaging never told you: that smell has nothing to do with how clean you are. It's a materials problem. And once you see the mechanism, you can't unsee it.

WHAT'S ACTUALLY HAPPENING

Fresh menstrual blood barely smells at all. The smell only develops when blood sits on a surface, in warmth, without airflow. Three conditions. Remember them, because you're about to recognise something.

Now look at what a disposable pad actually is. The layer touching your skin is not cotton, whatever the flowers on the wrapper suggest. On most pads it's a woven plastic top sheet, sitting on an absorbent core, wrapped in a plastic backing so nothing gets through to your underwear. Plastic on top. Plastic underneath.

That construction does its one job: your clothes stay clean. But it also does three other things. It keeps everything on the surface, because plastic doesn't absorb. It keeps everything warm, because plastic doesn't breathe. And it seals the air out. Blood, warmth, no airflow. All three conditions, met in full, strapped into your underwear for hours at a time, every month, since you were a teenager.

That's not a hygiene failure. That's the design.

WHY NOTHING YOU'VE TRIED HAS WORKED

Changing more often helps for an hour, then the cycle restarts, because the material hasn't changed.

Scented pads add perfume on top of the problem, which is why they tend to make it worse rather than better. Showering twice a day treats a problem you don't have.

Every fix you've tried was aimed at you. The problem was never you. It's the plastic.

THE ONLY QUESTION THAT MATTERS

So here's the rule worth keeping, whatever you buy for your period, from any brand, in any shop. Ignore the front of the packaging and ask one question: what material is touching my skin?

You're looking for three things. A natural inner lining, ideally cotton, directly against your skin. Absorbent layers underneath it that pull moisture down and away from the surface instead of leaving it there. And breathable fibres, so nothing sits and warms up.

This, by the way, is also why so many women who tried cheap period pants ended up disappointed and went back to pads. If the lining of the pants is synthetic, you've swapped one plastic surface for another. Same dampness, same warmth, same afternoon. The category was never the problem. The lining was.

THE EXAMPLE WE FOUND

Once you know what to look for, the search gets much easier. The clearest example we've found is Lunã, a European period underwear brand that takes the inner lining as seriously as this article does. Several of their styles have a natural cotton inner lining with the absorbent layers working underneath it: the brief, the hipster, and both of their teen models.

Their site even lets you filter the range by inner lining material, which tells you something about where their priorities sit. Set it to cotton and you'll see exactly which styles qualify.

We've also put it to a longer test. One of our readers, Gemma, 34, wore Lunã for a full cycle and kept a diary for us. Her words on the smell, after day two: not fainter, gone. You can read her full five day diary here.

If you want to test it yourself without commitment, two practical notes. There's a fit guarantee, meaning you can exchange for another size even after wearing them. And their buy 1 get 1 free deal means a single order covers a full test cycle. But whatever you choose, from them or anyone else: check the lining first. Now you know why.

The 30 second version

The rule: the layer touching your skin decides everything. Ask what it's made of before you look at anything else.

Look for: a natural cotton inner lining, absorbent layers underneath that pull moisture away, breathable fibres.

“I’ve tried a few different brands, but Lunã is the only one that ticks every box for me. It’s soft, doesn’t feel bulky, and I feel completely confident wearing it even when I’m out all day. The quality really stands out.”

Rebecca Turner

“What I liked most is how normal they feel. No shifting, no awkward bulk, just reliable protection throughout the day. I’ve already recommended them to a couple of friends.”

Lauren Davies

“I’ve tested a few options and these are by far the most consistent. They hold up well even on longer days, and I don’t feel the need to constantly check or change. It’s made my periods a lot less stressful.”
